Wine Routes
A popular way of discovering the joys of South African wines is on a day trip from Cape Town - either self-drive or on an organised excursion by a local travel organiser. Devotees of the grape however can spend several days - weeks if they wish - finding out about the subtle differences between the various types, there are so many estates to visit. In all, there are 13 wine routes to explore - and 2,000 varieties of wine to sample!
Cape Backpackers promote self drive tours, but it is often felt that whilst this option gives you flexibility regarding time constrainsts of a guided tour, it is a poor substitute for the information and knowledge passed on by the tour guides. Not only do they have trained eyes for spotting wildlife, but they also have local knowledge regarding: animal identification, local history, vegetation, local culture and plenty of local stories to round off a great tour.
Cape Whale Coast (June - November), brings to our shores a gentle giant which migrate thousands of miles to our waters where the sheltered bays of the South African coast provide perfect refuge to mate and calve. The entire Cape Overberg coastline offers generous sightings of the whales and the area between Gansbaai and Hermanus, is a whale sanctuary. Hermanus offers the best land-based whale watching in the world and boasts the world’s only ‘whale crier’.
Addo Elephant Park
Addo Elephant National Park is situated 72km by road from Port Elizabeth. Established in 1931 to save 11 Elephants on the brink of extinction. The Park is now home to more than 400 Elephants, Lion, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhino, a range of Antelope species and the rare flightless dung Beetle. Addo Elephant National Park is a perfect destination for the adventurous outdoor and nature lover.
